Replaced a 9 speed KMC chain last night for a new 9 speed KMC chain as it was well passed it's use by date.

I have a cassette on order but I thought I could get away with keeping the old one for a few days at least.

I hop on, turn the pedals and crunch crunch, it's not having any of it.

Had to jump on the spare steelie.

You should have waited until the new cassette arrived but, there you go, easy said in hindsight.

Put the old chain back on and you will likely get a few more thousand km (if that was the cassette's first chain).
Connected with this (and drawn from your (and my) experience), when just replacing a chain, replace it when you've time to give it an immediate quick test on the road, and keep the old chain, in case you need to put it back on - when the road test shows that you've allowed the chain to elongate/wear too much.
