I've always been confident and happy doing your usual punctures, brake blocks, gear adjustment etc. on a bike but last week it dawned on my bike chain and cassette needed changing- never done that before.

Ordered both online and upon their arrival set aside some time at the weekend to have a go at breaking my best bike (safe in the knowledge the LBS was about a mile away if it all went pete tong)

Turned out everything went on exactly as it was supposed to (touch wood) I replaced like for like but it was still daunting, I'd never 'broken' a chain before, let alone installed a new one.

After my 25 mile commute yesterday it didn't miss a beat, I may have got away with this!:hyper:^_^

At the end of the day, most of a bikes mechanics is pretty simple.

Oh wait! You did wave a willow twig over the bike while burning the sacred powder of Pong Sanaeh Prai Maha Phuudt and reciting the indexation chant I hope? If not you are doomed...........

Well done. I agree with Phil that there is something special about riding a bike that you put together.
This is something I am planning to do in new year.
Where did you learn how to do it? Read a book or watch you tube videos?
Are you generally good at DIY?

When I try bike repairs I haven't tried before, I just ensure that the virgin is duly sacrificed (and happy)...

... and then I wake up

Mainly Youtube- it has several different videos for each job, that and sites like Park Tools and Bike Radar have good step by steps. I can also recommend a website called Madegood which has an extensive library of videos and guides.

It's on my list actually- being of a larger build, hopefully then I can maintain current stock and build new as well!
