i posted a little while ago about my HRM giving me slightly iffy readings and got some sage advice from CC as usual...i went out yesterday, sans garmin due to it being broken (see other post)...so, i was out with just my thoughts and my own sense of what was happening with my bod and cadence and perceived effort and such and this is what i noted. in the first 5 miles or so, my heart rate jumps fairly rapidly from resting/a bit of effort right up to where, i feel as though i'm one of a few things: a. very unfit. b. very broken. c. just don't have any middle ground. i plump for the last of these as, i'm not very unfit just fairly unfit and i'm not broken because otherwise things wouldn't all settle down and allow me to carry on my merry way at the same sort of cadence and perceived effort for the next 30 odd miles. i just don't seem to have any tick over or gradual rise into effort. no middle ground. i also rode in bigger gears than i generally tend to yesterday, just to see if that extra effort would cause any malfunction...it didn't and coming back on my loop, i was sailing along and very comfortable.

that's all. just thought i'd share. hi all :hello:

There's an old saying in cycling,
"The first ten miles are the worst".

With this in mind, most major tours stages start with a distance at the start under no race conditions until 'Depart Firme' several kilometers along the route. This is not to say the riders haven't been on the rollers for a hour as a warm up.

Don't do any strenous riding within the first ten miles. This should be an hour.

There are small blood vessels going to the muscle, called capillaries. These need to be encouraged to dialate with slowly increasing activity intesity, until one can give a full out sprint without feeling lactic for 20 - 30 seconds. If after an hour of gentle riding, a sprint makes the muscles hurt, slow down and keep riding at half power until the hurt goes away. When you feel ready, do another sprint.

but that's just it ningi' - i'm not riding hard in those first 5 - 10 miles. that's why i say i've no middle ground. i start off, i get 5 miles (for example) in, at a steady pace and i'm feeling the same as i do when i've been on the bike for 3 hours and i'm more than 40 miles in...and riding in bigger gears yesterday, i didn't notice the difference in my heart rate/comfort level. i was fine. i could feel the difference in my legs but only in my legs...i even got out of the saddle and pushed up some slopes and while it definitely pushed my heart rate, i recovered no probs and had no issues on the next slope, doing the same thing. i'm just a bit intrigued as to why my body likes to work this way. no dramas, just intrigued is all.
