I did post this in the 'computer' section but hopefully will get more success in this general section as others may have had similar problems.

Attached files will hopefully help explain (as I'm technically hopeless)....For some reason you will have to click 'open' to see it in full.

I have registered the device and can go to the Garmin website to view my rides. However when I try to view directly via my Garmin or as a saved file they just won't open.
What happens is I get a box asking if I want to view or save the information. If I click 'view' then a 2nd box opens showing files 'flying' from a globe across to a folder.....but this just keeps going i.e. it never actually opens.
I've tried using various programms but nothing happens.
I've also tried saving it then opening but its the same problem.
Any advice appreciated.

Not sure I understand your question, but if you don't get any sense here, take a look at the Garmin forum.

Probably coz I'm so UNtechnical.
I have attached a simplified copy of my screen which (I hope) shows what I get when I save the file. (again for some strange reason you have to click 'open' to see the problem)
The saved file shows itself a the Exlporer 'e'.
When I click on that I get the box (as shown on the attachment)
When I click on 'open' it seems to be trying to open (see 2nd box) but never manages to.....the 'files' just keep flying from the world globe to the folder.

This looks like a default file association issue, I think IE is trying to open the files rather than the website manage them for you.

Not sure what OS version you're using, but assuming Windows, go to "Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations" then unset the .fit extension for IE and try again.

Before doing that can I ask if it will affect any other files or operations?

I think you are trying to open a .fit file directly but you have no program associated with them. I'm not sure what program will do so but Garmin Connect on the web will you can manually upload it to there and download in a .gpx or.tcx format (but it'd be a lot easier to do an Auto sync rather than a manual upload). Alternatively the software which came with the GPS will also recognise it.

Yep - using your browser create an account at Garmin Connect - http://connect.garmin.com/ - attach the 200 via USB connection and click "Upload" to import all the activities that have been recorded. You'll then have all your stats and routes available.

Thanks........but you lost me after the 7th word.
I can read the info via the Garmen website........I didn't see anything related to uploading/downloading but will look again.
There is no software with it....only what is inside the device. I can plug it in then read it but I'm sure there must be a programme that allows me to store & open at will (but I have been wrong before:sad:)

Like I said, you have .fit files associates with Internet Explorer. Go and unset the assocation in the way I described above.

It's not 100% clear if you are trying to open these files from your PC or from the website. IF you want to open the .fit files that are stored on your Garmin (for simplicity, pretend you have no Internet Access for the purpose of this), you need a program that can read/understand .fit files. You could try Basecamp (from Garmin, it's free), or SportTracks from Zone five software.

Once you've made an account with Garmin Connect and signed in there's a button in the Top Right 'Upload' it then looks for an attached device, if it can't find one it then comes up with an option to 'Manually Upload a file' just browse to your .fit file and its sorted.

With my 305 the Garmin Training Centre program came on a cd (but its not as a good as Connect) and you can also download it from the Garmin Website. If that work (it says in the last update it handles .fit files) it'll allow you to store & open files at will.

Even if you could open the file then I doubt it'll help you in any way - it's just GPS position data and stuff.

Did you try the Garmin help page on getting started?

http://connect.garmin.com/help/start/usb

It explains very clearly what you need to do to upload activities. You just need an account and you need to install Garmin Communicator plugin.

Do you not have Garmin Training Centre - sure that would work with it as well as Garmin Connect. Garmin Connect is easy !

I plug my garmin into the usb, and use either (all actually) Garmin Training Centre (free programme that you get with the unit), Garmin Connect - it's a web site you sign into and it does the business, and also Strava - which is similar to Garmin Connect but has this rather nifty thing called 'segments' - once you do this you'll be addicted, oh and come back knackered after every ride
