I broke the 17mph barrier!

Yippee! I went out for a training run yesterday on this route. Just over 40 miles, taking in Crow Road. I must admit I felt really good yesterday. The rides over the last few months have done their job and I'm now finding the climbing is getting easier. I think my technique has improved and my leg strength/stamina is better.

The upshot of it is, that I broke the 17.0mph barrier for the first time! :wahhey:17.1mph to be exact. I'm very pleased with that. My first ride on this route in April saw me averaging 15.4mph.

I have been stopping on the odd occasion in the past either to catch my breath (at the top or on the way up hills) or to try and get feeling back in my fingers! No stopping yesterday (apart from traffic lights!). My fingers still get numb, but I just keep shaking them etc and it doesn't bother me too much.

It just goes to show, that anyone can see big improvements over time so long as they get some miles in their legs.

Now if I could just beat 17.5mph....

well done thats impressive. I'm still lucky if I see 15mph over 20 miles . Until I lose another 2x stone I'm unlikey to improve that.

Have you thought of trying a TT ?

Oh, don't worry about that. I intend on enjoying PfS. Cake eating will be where my competitive streak will show!

I could probably do with loosing a little weight (2 or 3 kilos) but I'm lucky with my weight not being too bad (having done judo most of my life). However, I think weight probably makes a huge difference.

I have thought about TT, but I know that my speeds are still way below what some TT'ers can achieve. That's what amazes me about cycling. I'm sure you are fit, I consider myself fairly fit, but there are lots of cyclists out there who are just super, super fit. There will always be someone who can just breeze past you....

yes but thats not the point.
If I thought like that i wouldn't go out on my bike at all.
I weigh 17 stone and find the slightest incline a major challenge. I have 3x neighbours who are keen cyclist and not one of them weigh more than 10 stone

I can keep up on the flat and downhill I'm a lot faster but its hilly round here and whilst I grind to a halt on the hills they breeze up without pausing

The beauty of TT is that it is you against yourself and the clock. Even if you were the fastest in your local club there would always be someone from another club that would pass you like you were standing still.

The challenge is to improve your times not be faster than anyone else. Its not in any way a race. There are folk that compete with a hybrid and MTB's  and never go under 30 minutes .

I reckon we should start a CC TT club
We could get everyone on CC to try a TT and a Tri. Maybe a hill climb and an Audax/ sportive too

Aye, your probably right. I might consider something later next year, after the winter lull and I've got my fitness back up again.

At the moment though, I suppose I have my own 40 mile TT that I have seen improve since April. If anyone wants to challenge my time on the Magnatom (Crow Road) 40 mile TT.....

Time yourself from traffic lights just at the entrance to Morrisons (just north of Anniesland Cross) and back to those lights. I have a little extra to do after that, but not much.

Maybe this could become the Magnatom TT afterall!
