"in fact, the problem with snow and bicycles is not snow itself – which, if it's the crunchy sort, gives quite good grip – but either ice or salt. If you do venture out, then you have to stick to the tyre tracks made by other vehicles, which means that anyone then overtaking you hoses you down with an exfoliating mixture of grit, filth and vile frozen stuff."

So she doesn't cycle on snow that has been compacted and then turned into ice like all but the main roads like we have here atm?

When the writer of that little article does that then she can be self righteous !

"the Danes clear their cycle lanes as efficiently as their roads and there's outrage in Hamburg that the city's 13% of cyclists have been reduced to 10% "

Clear cycle lanes arf arf dont make me laugh !!

Sure i can ride a mtb with studs but that would

Involve me getting a 3rd bike which swmbo will not allow
spend money which swmbo will not allow
get up at about 4 am to get to work in time and not get home again till about 8 pm if i had a bike that could cope with said conditions at a safe speed .

Aint gonna happen  swmbo will not allow ( see a pattern emerging?)

Interesting, the Wayfarer track through the Berwyn mountains can be very extreme in the snow and ice. I've done it many times... in my Landy!

I've wimped out over the last few weeks and done no cycling blaming the ice and snow - as a kid it wouldn't have stopped me so it must be old age

For some strange reason the only bike that i have had no problem with commuting in all this white stuff is my Boardman fixed on skinny slicks......even crossing a snow covered field the only issue i had was initial traction but once i was moving all was good !
The added bonus of the fixed was not having to use the brakes as much which was the cause of my only off this year on the Hybrid.

I wish we did. I know that not all of you will agree on cycle paths, but I use them regularly to get to work and some were clearer and easily usable, and some quite main ones were totally untouched. I've been toying with the idea of emailing the council to ask why only some were cleared and whether they had plans to increase the clearing.
