they are very expensive and i have always managed to stop just fine on my cantilever rim brakes
but saying that when i this summer get a road bike, maybe a defy 5, i think i might treat it to ultegra brakes

Means you can control the breaking pressure and not lock up the wheel so easily .
simples have sh*te normal rim brakes and rather worn pads! sorry just kidding
in that case hydraulic rim brakes do round rather good but still at that price i think i would just stick with normal mechanical rim brakes and pulling the rear lever gently first and then gently the on the front

I think you might find it more cost effective and easier to change the pads first!

anyways i have been running cheap brakes for many years now with no problem

I never saw the point of hydraulic rim brakes. They're more expensive, heavier, more complicated, difficult and expensive to work on than cable operated brakes and they feel wooden at the lever.

I have just got a bike with normal discs and i can see the benefits but i find them a lot fiddlier to get set up right than calipers

IMO rim hydraulic brakes of the Magura ilk are an ill conceived solution to a problem that was solved by V-brakes. The V-brake should have killed the Magura rim brake except people are blinded by the 'H' word. V-brakes are lighter, simpler, cheaper and more reliable than Hydraulic rim brakes so it really is a no-brainer when it comes to a choice between the two.

sorry just realised in my first post on this thread i meant to say i have always stopped just fine on my V BRAKES not cantilever

v brakes seem to be used from the very cheapest BSO's to bike on the other side of £500 or so. why is this?

The weight difference is not as much as people believe.
SRAM red22 Hydro Rim Brakes weigh 774g a set with shifters and the mechanical SRAM Red22 rim brakes weigh 760g with shifters. You have no cable stretch or maintenance adjustment required which is a good thing.

Having used both mechanical and hydro rim brakes the difference is not in the outright braking power but in the modulation, feel and control.
I have no doubt that on wheels with carbon braking surfaces the difference is noticeable.

If Shimano ever make a set they will be on all my bikes.
