Hydraulic Disc Brakes Rubbing!

I took the front wheel off my mountain bike recently to transport it and when I went to put it back, the disc would not slide between the brake pads. I used a small screwdriver to prise the pads apart which enabled the wheel to be inserted to the forks. However, the pads are now rubbing on the disc when the wheel is rotated. I was wondering if the pistons or whatever operates the pads are sticking and if this is easily resolved?

There is a strange law of physics that makes this happen, and i am not joking.

Same thing with my new brakes (Avid). just reset the caliper (loads of videos on youtube).

I have to take the wheels off to transport my bike, 1st outing (without wheels being taken off) no issue at all. "2nd outing wheels off to transport it,brakes now rubbing!!.

All sorted now - reset the calipers.

fit wheel .
slacken allen bolts holding caliper to frame/forks
apply brakes
retighten Allen bolts to correct torque ( not yank it hard and watch the self levelling cups split Oh no )
release brakes.
spin whel and hear no clink clink clink where pad used to catch.

i have a vague idea how or why it should happen but it invlvs thinking on a sunday evening.

Actually sounds like the brake lever got squeezed when the wheel was out which explains why the rotor would not fit. Take out the pads and using 10 or 12mm ring spanner push the pistons back into the caliper. This is easier of the bike. Refit caliper and pads then center as subaqua says.

To stop this happening in future fold up a piece of card and insert between the pads.

or use the correct shaped bit of plastic your LBS should have given you with all the user manuals, when you collected the bike. I always wondered what it was for till I RTFM.

Thanks. I tried this and it worked. The guy in my local Halfords also suggested doing this when I mentioned it. Don't think I'll remove the wheel unless I have to.
