SIip-slidin' down Big Pig...
Hi all,
I'm after some advice about tyres for my hybrid. It currently has 26" x 1.6 tyres. Being a relatively new returnee to bikes and cycling, I'm not sure whether the 1.6 refers to the width or the height/depth of the tyre, as I'm struggling to find many 26 x 1.6 tyres. Could I step up the 1.6 to say 1.9 without problems ?

I mostly ride fire-roads, with a bit of single track,- very little tarmac roads. Any advice or recommendations would be very much appreciated ! Cheers, Mireystock.

1.6 inch is the width, that's already a 40 (odd) mm wide tyre, I don't reckon you'd need to go to a 1.9 inch tyre unless you were rock hopping. Most Hybrids would be fine with a 35-38 mm, certainly on the light trails etc. I've got slightly taller wheels on my Hybrids I run 700c 35 tyres, with no problems on trails and paths.

This should help you decide.

I'm on Scwalbe land cruisers, no problems on the sharp rocky paths ways and trails, and also makes life easy on the road as well. I can't compare them to anything though, cos they came with the bike. I will say i have used and abused them, and they have suffered no injuries yet! I have been pricing up replacements, and they are about £20 to £25 a pair.

Hi guys, I'm new back to cycling after 21 years and have a similar question. I've picked up a really cheap mtb with 26 x 1.95 knobbly tires and I would like to do some road use with occasional use on the park with my daughter so was thinking of the Schwalbe silentos or hurricanes. Anybody had any use with these, are they any good? Also the silentos are 26 x 1.75, will these fit on my rims and will I need new inner tubes?
Thanks from a newbie.

1.75 inch and 1.95 inch tyres will both be fine on your rims. The tubes will have a range of tyre sizes they will be suitable for, for example you'll see something like 26 / 1.75 - 2.125 printed on the box, that means the tube will be fine for anything from a 1.75 to 2.125 inch tyre.

I'd recommend these.

Dunno when 3 for 2 finishes:sad:

Land Cruisers are what I have on my Specialzed Cross Trail, I got rid of the semi slicks it came with, they were pretty tractionless on anything that wasn't tarmac

Last night i ventured onto an old disused golf course, it was very boggy and muddy in places, more suited to MTB tyres, but with the odd slip and slide, they bit and performed very well.
