Hybrid sizing different to road bike sizing?

Title says it all really, when looking at frame sizes for 'hybrid' bikes, is this different to road bike sizing? Just that I've seen a nice Bianchi hybrid on ebay reasonably local ending today and the framesize given is 17 inches. The only thing I can compare that to would be my Bianchi Nirone which is a 55 or 57cm frame.
