Hello

I have been commuting to work 3 or 4 times a week for 4 weeks now (a 15 mile round trip) and I am really struggling with hunger. Before I started cycling I was a regular gym goer but never before have I found myself so hungry for most of the time. I increased my food intake due to the extra exercise from around 1200 to calories a day to around 1700 with a good balanced diet and I was hoping that my body would have adjusted by this point.

I just wondered if anyone had any tips/suggestions on what to eat/do? Did anyone else struggle with this problem when they first started?

Thank you in advance!

Generic example of what you eat please. 1700 is barely enough but what you eat within that, may not be helping.

Usually:

Banana, small glass of fruit juice and water before my commute
Bowl of porridge or toast when I get to work
Fruit/nuts/cereal bar as a snack if i need it in the morning or afternoon
Pasta salad/Sandwich/small baked potato/ beans on toast for lunch
Dinner is usually some sort of meat with potatoes or rice with veg or a pasta bake/bolognese
The occasional bag of crisps/chocolate/ take away

Unless you are a small child (and I assume that you are not because you have a job!), you are not eating anywhere near enough!

If you are trying to lose weight, then you are probably going about it too aggressively. In that case, work out how many calories you need a day to support your activity profile and don't reduce that number by more than 10-20%.

Make sure that you drink enough water - thirst can be mistaken for hunger.

Start the day with a good breakfast - porridge!

No idea what size those portions are but I'd add 25-50% onto them if it was me.

I use the app mapmyride which suggests i should be on around 2000 a day with my activity level but i often struggle to eat this much (i feel like i am always eating at the best of times!)

I am not actively trying to lose weight and so far i haven't lost any, in fact i have probably put on 2 or 3 lbs.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Ah - I just noticed that you are female - that would mean that your calorie needs are probably smaller than I was thinking.

If that 2,000 cals/day figure is right for you, then by your own figures you were 800 short of that so it isn't surprising vthat you were hungry! Even now, you are 300 cals/day short. And I reckon that 2,000 is low for a cyclist, even a small female one!
