Hub stuck / stiff - *Update* - Looks Broken?

Hi,

I've got a problem with my rear wheel. It has stopped spinning freely, as if the brakes are on.

I've taken it off the bike and removed the cassette. The freehub seems OK but the hub itself is very stiff. I can only turn it using a spanner. The hub is unmarked though the rubber cover has Quando on it, so it may be one of theirs. It's a newish hub and it is QR.

Any ideas about what further to look for? Is the next step is getting a cone spanner and loosening the locking bolt and having a look at the bearings?

Thanks

Matt

I'd say yes. If the bearings have tightened to the point they've siezed, it could have done damage. You'll need to inspect it to find out.

Thanks, It's not quite seized in that I can turn it with a spanner, but it's obviously tighter than it should be.

Having taken the hub apart it appears that part of the outer hub has broken. Is this common? Have you seen this before?

I agree with Phil. While yours might not be exactly the same as pic below, I think the part on the left of the freehub components below broke. Given it is a Quando, parts availability and therefore the chance of repair is not great. Given the economics I would say new wheel is also more likely than new/replacing hub.

Thanks. I'm sending it back and it should be replaced. Just got to package up the wheel...

Just to update, the shop thinks it's down to flawed casting on the freehub and are replacing it.

That's good. The crystalline look of the break is a classic sign of a faulty casting.

I'm glad it's getting sorted.
