Hub gear *crack* noise

I have a 2010 Trek Soho that is used for my daily commute. The bike has covered around 500 miles from new.

The hub is adjusted correctly according to the alignment markings and in normal operation is perfectly smooth.

The problem arises when I pull away from a standing start with moderate to high pedal pressure, there is an almighty crack accompanied by a 1/16th (ish) free revolution of the pedals, this is usually in 3rd gear but it also occurs in other gears.

I suspect I may need to take it into my LBS but wondered if anyone had any ideas of things I could check first?

I wondered if the belt tension is a little low and this is causing the belt to slip under the heavy load?

Thanks,

Chris.

Is the freewheel sticking? Only try flushing it with GT85 if it is a separate freewheel, the hub gear itself is probably very fussy about lube.

I've never ridden a belt drive bicycle so can't quote from experience but it sounds as if the belt is slipping over the teeth under high load. I checked out the Gates Website and they also say it's possible and to check the belt tension.

If you try this link it will give you some more information:

Hope you find it useful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your replies Keith & Snailracer

I may have found the problem. I had a rear tyre p******e on Friday and had to remove the wheel to fit a new inner tube. When I came to re-assemble I noticed that the wheel was 'wobbling' even when the axle bolts were torqued, I took the wheel off again and found that the nut which holds the hub on the spindle/bearing was not even finger tight.

I need to look up the correct torque for this nut but for now I nipped it on tight(ish) and it's like I have a brand new hub!!

Does anyone think there will be damage to the rear bearings from having run with the nut loose?

'tightish'

right up there with 'as tight as I dared'

LOL! No it really was only tight(ish) in fact it clearly wasn't tight enough as it has loosened itself again after a short ride to the train station this morning. I'll be attacking it with a torque wrench and the correct manufacturers torque specification at the weekend.
