Hub bearings bed-in?

Quick one. I had a back wheel retrued and bearings regreased at the LBS. I notice there's a faint *touch* of friction and noise in the rotation. It's not my imagination afaik, as I've spun a couple of other back wheels to compare. Guess my question is, is this normal and will it fix itself?

(I could take it back, but it's been a kicking around unused a long while already).

Either they did the cones up too tight (easily rectified and the LBS should correct that for you) or your bearing races are shot, which means a new hub. If the latter then the LBS should have noticed.

Alternatively, your LBS either did nothing to your hub or did something but not very well (e.g. didn't replace the old bearings, didn't use enough bearings, or didn't use enough grease).

It won't correct itself, btw. You need to sort it out or it'll get worse. Basically, take it back if you're not happy.

Easily rectified and do it yourself, wouldnt go back to LBS that can't do a simple job like that properly.

Thanks both. I suppose any friction at all means the bearings go downhill fast and you end up with a bunch of metal shavings in there?

It's a spare, so it's not the end of the world if I have a go myself and make a mess of it, although was kinda hoping it could be left (not going back to the shop although suppose I should on principle).

Yes, I tend to agree but then I do all bike jobs myself anyway. But should his LBS be allowed to get away with bodging his wheel?

;)

They messed up the cones, not re-laced the wheel.

;)
