My mate had a very badly squealing back brake on his GT Avalanche, a Tektro Auriga Comp. It was also in need of bleeding.

He was all for taking it to the LBS, but i said nahhh, we'll do that

After looking on t'internet it looked a piece of p**s. Got some tubing from work, his missus had a supply of syringes (nurse, nowt sinister!) and once he got the oil we were on!

Bleeding the brake was easy. I rubbed the pads down on emery cloth, cleaned the discs with acetone (also free from work ), bit of Copaslip on the pad backs.

Guess what? The brake still squealed like that bloke out of Deliverance

Swapped pads over with the front and the front then started squealing, Aha! Must be the pads

Now to the point of this rather long post, after searching on CC for any advice, someone had posted that an idea was to take the bike out down a steep hill, dowse the brake in water and just brake like mad.

Well, with me riding alongside my mate, drink bottle of water in hand, we found the steepest hill round our way and in Norfolk that's no mean feat.

As he pedalled and braked, I squirted water on his front brake and guess what? It worked :bravo:

So thanks to that OP and if you're ever stuck with a squealer, give it a try
