I'm scared that it's going to die in the monsoon that awaits my commute home

Should I just stick it in my Ortlieb and forget about stats for tonight?

It's ok! I've fettled a solution using one of those bags you put coins in to take them to the bank and an elastic band!

Very waterproof.
Have had mine for near 2 years now and have ridden in the heaviest of downpours many a time with no problem.
Just make sure that the rubber cover for the lead is shut properly.

Cheers guys... guess I'm just a little over protective as it's less than a week old.

Here's a question though... with most devices like this the charging advice is to let it run flat on a fairly regular basis. When I'm commuting though it's getting a blast back to full every night when I upload the data. Will this kill it? Should I only upload once a week?

Nope, it will be fine.
I have never let mine run flat.

That was based on old batteries which suffered from a problem known as 'battery memory', newer Nimh batteries don't have that problem; I download/charge my 305 after every ride and several years after I got it it still lasts as long. You should have a look at strava other folk are uploading a ride every 5 minutes, it doesn't seem to be doing their units any harm either ;)

I have been in many a downpour, my only additional suggestion is to let it completely dry off before plugging it into the USB port as this is the only place where you dont want water entering.

I have tried to drown my 705 the last two years, and my 200 the last two weeks. They are fine. Just make sure the USB slot is sealed with the cover.

Its rated at IPX7 waterproof which is fully immersed in water at a depth of 1m for 30 minutes. My Garmin Dakota is the same and I wanted to test it a bit so put it in a pint glass of water for 15 minutes, no problems at all. Basically it was around 8 months ol d and had never been wet so didnt want it going out of warranty and failing in the first sign of rain  . It has since been in the bike in heavy rain and still fine. I know what you mean though you dont want an expensive unit dying on you in a light shower!!
