How waterproof is a Garmin Edge 200?

I'm not about to dive into the sea with it, but I would like to ride in the rain with it from time to time - is that a good idea or not?

It will be fine.
Have been on many day long/night long rides in wet weather.

Just make sure that the rubber seal on the back is pushed in fully.

I cycled in torrential rain with it for days on end - no issues yet. Same can't be said about the rider though!

+ 1 for that, and if you've lost it I understand Garmin are quite reasonable about sending a replacement FOC.

I wouldn't do it but I've seen Garmin places in bath (I think they're rated to 1m for an hour). WRT the 200 mine's been caught in a few heavy showers and has not let me down.

There was a topic on here a while back about someones Garmin "leaking" and them refusing to repair it under warranty. It was pointed out that the devices are supposed to be water resistant to 50m (and are claimed to be such in all the manuals Garmin supply) - a replacement was soon sent. So to answer your question - yes they should brush off even a heavy shower no problems!!

Was caught in torrential rain a few months ago and the Garmin was exposed to the rain for a good 50 mins with no problems. If I go out and it is raining or very likely to rain I cover it with clingfilm just to be on the safe side but not sure it is really necessary.

as mentioned above make sure the seal is pushed in correctly on the back and i have never had an issue with riding in heavy rain so dont worry about it!!

Correct rated at ipx 7 I by Garmin.
Translated to 1 m for 30 minutes minimum i believe?

Don't ever tell Garmin as they do not damage replace if you do this, the cling film traps water between it and the device giving it no place to run off
