A friend of mine broke a chain on a sportive a few weeks back. He had just upgraded the bike to 105 gear set and new wheels on a Specialized Allez. He now has a Specialized Roubaix and yesterday he broke the front forks. I wasn't with him at the time but I am beginning to question his ability to handle the bike. Surely, no one can be so unlucky with two new bikes can they?

It can be done: Aged about 15 I broke (or rather, bent) some steel forks. I also snapped the down tube and damaged beyond repair the back door of a parked Vauxhall Chevette.

I was Ok, bar a pulled quad. I went over the roof onto the bonnet.

It was for such occasions that my dad reserved the phrase "perishing kid". He used it quite a lot.

I did that too, around the same age. Minor differences...... I chose a Mini Traveller to attack, bent the forks but the down tube survived. Sprained both wrists.

It would have to be a really fast speed to do damage to forks that way and you would do more damage to oneself before the forks would break.

@dan_bo broke a steel frame, and not his plastic forks crashing into a tree (off road stuff).
