Hello all,

I have a Revolution Couier classic MTB based Hybrid which I wish to raise the handle bars on just a couple of inches. At the moment it has flat 25.4mm clamp bars but all the bars I seem to see are bigger, As I've just found out I am to loose my job at the end of December it needs to be an Ebay buy. The question I have is a lot of the bars that are on there have the stem included but how do I know if the stem will fit the forks I have ( bare with me I've never had a bike with this type of fitting before).

Many thanks all

you are right - in olden times the bars we 1 inch = 25.4 mm and this is what the stem would take. in last couple of years what is know as oversize - 1 1/4 in or 31 mm has appears. Sometimes the stem comes with a shim for smaller dia. bars.

to raise your bars you would do one of more of the following:
1. raise position of the stem - not alwayy possible if the steerer is cut to length
2. fit adjustable stem like ^^^ posted about
3. turn stem upside down - most are angled so that the bar is raiese or lowered
4. fit rise bars - these are non straight bars with the hand grip parts raised.

^^^ this is all related to ahead type stem which clamp onto the steerer; mose are 1 1/8 diameter, some older 1 inch exist.

also you may have a quill fitting, these qre 1 inch but since you talk of stem, I suspect not. quill fitting have an expander bolt that sits inside the steereer and by undoing it, the stem can be raised or lowered and the bolt done up.

The Courier has an ahead stem. These sacrifice adjustability for simplicity. The simple answer is there isn't a great deal of adjustment you can do.

If the stem (clamping onto the fork steerer tube) is already pointing upwards, and there are no spacer washers above the stem, then its as high as it will go.

An adjustable stem as above may allow a little more height.

Many thanks for your help everyone much appreciated. All of the previous bikes I have had with the exception of my MTB ( which I have never had cause to mess with) Have had the Quill type stem ( never knew it was called that thanks 02GF74) and I wasn't sure if there were multiple sizes of stem just to confuse me that bit more.

Again Many thanks All

I going to get one of these for the bike that my girlfriend uses. She doesn't like the crouched forward position of the MTB set up. Here are the details:

The Powerplay Adjustable A-Headstem stands out as an adjustable rise handlebar stem that is elegant, lightweight and affordable. (Adjustable stems are frequently clunky and usually weigh at least 500g).
Adjustable from 0 through to 60 degree rise - helps you achieve YOUR most comfortable riding position.
Forged alloy.
4-bolt front clamp for fast, secure and stress-free handlebar mounting.
Takes 25.4mm-centre bars.
Fits 28.6mm (1 1/8 inch outside diameter) unthreaded steerers.
242g.
