How to change a quill stem?

How do I change a quill stem? Do I prise the jaws open or do I have to take the bar tape off and feed the stem through?

Bar tape off and feed through the stem. To remove the stem turn from the forks turn the allen key 3 rotations and then give the nut a knock with a wooden mallet. The stem will then easily come away.

Do not keep turning the nut with the allen key until the nut comes out as then you are cream crackered.

yup - remove the tape and feed the bars though the stem (after slackening the bolt first ).

You may have to prise the stem open a smidgeon - but no more - to get the bars out, but there is usually a way, twisting and turning the bars this way and that.

For removing bars, wedge the clamp open with a small coin to give you a bit more clearance if possible.

if the bars were fitted, then they can be removed - good tip with the coin to wedge it open - take is slowly if you do nto want to sctach your bars.
