I recently did 5 days in the saddle and despite lots of vaseline and savlon, still suffered pretty badly from sores.

I did a couple of days before applying anything as I've never suffered much before and thought I might get away without them! As such by the time I applied savlon and vaseline (after day 2) I was pretty sore already and struggled to get any better.

I had two pairs of shorts and made sure that I was wearing a clean/ dry pair each day.

Any tips on how to avoid sores would be greatly appreciated, i.e. what to apply and when.

Works for me, although it is expensive for what it is.

I had a similar problem to you. I would get a sore (or more) almost every week. I tried Sudocreme and vaseline but without any luck.

But recently I decided to lower the front of my saddle (only by a few mm). This seems to have stopped the problem completely.

I now just use some talc before and after a ride to help absorb excess sweat.

some saddles just ain't comfy, and will rub in places you really don't want them to. If you are using a brooks, you've only got yourself to blame. nasty things
