How to adjust shiman m520 pedal cones

I stupidly thought i would service my pedals and now i cant adjust the cones properly, they either tighten up too much or fi i leave them slightly loose they over time will bind. The proper tool is around 60quid, i could buy 2 sets of pedals for that but im loathed to throw them out. Any suggestions?

Not sure about the 520s, but I had the same issue with my m324s - I managed to do it by wedging a screwdriver against the cone and using a socket - it took a few goes to get the adjustment right though. If you search around you might be able to get a tool for a lot less than the Shimano one - there was one shop selling them for under £20, unfortunately they aren't carrying them anymore. I would persevere until you get the adjustment right - mine have been good for 10,000km so far.
