There is no minimum amount as there is no maximum amount....
If you want it, buy it, if you don't think you need something, buy it anyway.

You don't have to spend anything or very much. Many of the people on this forum are at the other end of the scale in the cycling world, so in that sense it is misleading.

Well the bike computer costs between £5-£30 or even more depending on what features you want. I'm not sure about the others sorry ;)

depends what you want from your kit. i use the £10 8 function halfords computer on my hybrid and it does the job just fine. last year i bought a cheap aldi jersey and it's not looking so good.

at the very least, the kit should do the job intended at a level your happy with.

i went down my LBS and priced up the whole lot together

I'd say gloves are the most important - £15. Speedo £5-30.
Shorts - not needed.
Tops - not needed. Wait for an ALDI sale and get one for £5.
Trainers & Pedals - not needed.
Track Pump, upto £30. Mini pump £15.
Puncture repair kit £3.

For longer rides, padded shorts are definately a bonus! Ive got 3 pairs from Decathlon, cost me £6 each and they seem to do the trick perfectly. Also got 3 jerseys from there too cost £6 each complete with pockets on the back!

My gloves i decided to spend, for me, a fair amount on. I bought Pearl Izumi Elite Gel's, extremely comfortable and with very large gels on them. Use them everyday and couldnt imagine cycling without them.

Agree with marinyork, id only change preference to decent padded bib shorts instead of gloves (which I only use in cold weather).

Im slowly upgrading the aldi cheap stuff with decent kit as and when I can afford to. For the short term they do just fine though.

Pedals not needed???? I would have thought of all stuff listed they come first, followed by a mini pump + puncture kit, multi tool, then track pump. Then padded longs or shorts (or padded underwear). Agree that with care much of this can be bought from Aldi/Lidl - but be careful, some of their stuff is cr.p. Shop around on the net, compare prices, check if free p+p. Computer comes last. If you want to work out distances/averages I expect you already have a watch, then log on to Bikehike ......

Suggest minimum stuff you need (depending on the type of riding you do)

On bike repairs

  • mini tool with allen keys and screwdriver
  • tyre levers
  • One spare inner tubes
  • patches
  • pump
all the above to be carried with you when cycling

Clothes (if you are cycling for more than 30 mins at a time)

  • padded shorts - make a real difference
  • padded gloves - again make a difference
  • helmet and hi vis vest (though others will tell you these are not needed - you read the threads and decide for yourself)
Pretty much everything else is not essential, but of course the more riding you do, the more useful say, wicking r-shirts and breathable waterproofs will become.

But I would go with the above as the minimum

Depends on how deep your pockets are...

It is important to distinguish between good value and cheap, also between the necessary and unnecessary.

So for instance a good cycle computer is a better but than a cheap one, but not absolutely necessary. A cycle helmet is just a fashion accessory and therefore a waste of money. A p*nct*re repair kit while cheap is also mostly good value, and along with, a good pump is a necessity...

I don't agree. This forum is biased heavily towards the high spending cyclist. Newbies come on here and believe they must have £500 bikes, must have clipless pedals, must have padded shorts. I am merely putting another point of view across. I didn't have clipless pedals for my first three years of cycling, they are great but they were a very expensive purchase.

My one piece of advice would be to buy the best shorts, or bib shorts, you can afford. I have a pair of Assos F1 Mille which cost me around £80 five years ago. Superbly comfortable and £80 over five eyars is good value..........though I've just checked the price of a new pair which made me wince a bit!!
