I watched a 1995 repeat of Shooting Stars last night on a rubbish satellite channel.

One of the questions was how much is a Snickers Bar. Answer 28p.

They now cost 75p in the newsagent next to my London office. Can you beat that?

Apart from the stupid name change Marathon to Snickers, they are now a lot smaller than they were.

Confectionery prices seem very steep to me. 75p... that's 15 shillings!!! For a bar of chocolate????!!!!

Hmm... If biscuits get expensive you can always try making you own, but I don't know anyone who makes their own chocolate. Is it do-able?

Are you sure about that? I've never verified it but my perception is that most chocolate bars and crisp bags are larger than they were when I was a youngster. I remember Tayto cheese and Onion for about 8p but the bags were smaller then (I'm convinced of it). And now you can buy things like a King sized Mars bar.

By pure coincidence, I just bought one from a corner shop in Hebden Bridge which is not known for its low prices and they only charged 51p!

I try restrict my 'chocolate' buying to Fudge bars - only 20p and great energy food on an Audax and petrol stations usually have them, so when required to get a receipt for a 'control', it's about the cheapest thing I can buy - no point buying Mars bars and whatnot that I won't eat - I've still got a can of coke that I bought for the receipt at the end of a 400km in April.

My favourite is the £1 bar of Cadburys Whole Nut.It was 99p and the shopkeeper told me it has got smaller. They all do it.Even the chocolate Aldi sells is not that cheap. But who cares.I love the stuff.

You can't realistically make your own chocolate (it would basically involve processing the raw beans which is not practical at home) but you can make your own chocolates, i.e. you can make truffles, liqeur chocolates etc. What you can't do is get as cheap as the mass produced cadburys style chocolates. i.e. you can make good chocolates cheaper than the good commercial stuff but you can't make cheap chocolate cheaper than cheap commercial stuff.

OTOH you could just buy the multipacks of snickers and the like which means getting the price of a full sized bar down to 25pence.

If I use Lidl when they've got cycling stuff in then I'll get a multipack

of their version of Snickers/Mars.

Something like £1.20 something for eight bars.
