Getting prepared to contact the insurance company of the driver that hit me back in December.
Obviously damage that causes the bike to stop working is something i am claiming for.

But what i want to know is can i claim for new shifters seeing as how my current ones where damaged (aesthetically) during the collision. The shifters them selves are worth just over £100 a pair and it will affect the value of the bike if i try to re-sell it.

You'd claim for aesthetical damage to a car so do so on a bike, IMHO.

I think you're entitled to claim the cost of putting the bike back to the condition it was in before the crash, so get a quote from a bike shop to replace all damaged bits?

ps same goes for clothing or anything else lost/damaged

The trick is to be able to "prove" the damage, and that your claim is reasonable.

A few years ago a friend of mine had his frame resprayed at a driver's expense after an "expert statement" that a failure to do so would lead to rust developing around the chips and scrapes and not only lead to a shortened life of the frame, but also the chance of a catastrophic failure.

Any claim for damages to the bike must be supported by the invoice or quote from a cycle dealer. Claims for injury are much more difficult and usually much lower than for injury due to failed product rather than road collision!!

You should claim for any cost involved in putting the bike back to the condition it was in before the accident. I would go along with the advice of getting a bike shop to replace and fit the parts (why should you do the work?) and do an overall safety check/service at the same time, as part of the claim.

As others have said, claim for any expense required to put everything back to the state it was in just before the claim - that's what insurance is for.
If that involves trips too and from hospital\bike shop etc. you are legally entitled.

They may bitch, but tough.

From an insurance perspective, you're entitled to be put back in to position you were in before the incident. You have a responsibility to mitigate your loss where possible, but in this case this would probable only extend as far as getting a couple of comparitive quotes for the same parts so you can prove you have tried to ensure you've got the best price for the parts you need.

When personal injury is involved, which sadly happens far too often to cyclists involved in accidents due to someone elses' faults, surely apart from being put back into the position sans accident (i.e. bike repair/replace, loss of wages etc.) they could also claim and be compensated for pain and suffering etc.? For a lot of injuries, medical treatments can't ever make good completely either.

I have no experience of such claims, but this site supposedly gives approximate figures. Does anyone have such claim experience? Are the figures about right?

Yes you can. I went to my local LBS, told them what was damaged, they did the quote. New XT SPD's got scuffed in accident, so claimed for a new set - did buy a new set, they went on my fixed that was on 'order' from the aforementioned LBS
