what are you asking about?

the number of links in an uncut i.e. new chain or number of links when fitted to a bike?

the latter will vary according to frame size, bike type, gearing etc.

the uncut chain is longer than you'll ever need - you alwasy end upo taking about 10 links out.

Are you sure you want a Shimano chain? I hate them. The accepted standard length of a boxed chain is 114 links.

Oh now that throws another one in there ;)

I don't know that I don't want one. It came with my new Planet X Ti Sportive so I will stick with it unless I get probs with it.

Need the weight and length of the chain for a Polar CS600 so if anyone has one hanging around then if you wouldn't mind sticking it on a set of scales and either measuring the length of it or counting the number of links then that would be great. Well all you can do is ask

I would remove it and measure it myself only I haven't ever done this before and read in Zinn, which I have just purchased, that 10 speed chains are best left alone once they have been linked unless there are master links, etc which make removal easier, as they can be more susceptible to breakage.

Huh????? I'm confused, why do you need to know how heavy and long it is?

Apparently it will tell the computer the density of the chain therefore if link are removed it doesn't matter as the links are all the same size then the weight will fall proportionately and thus density still remains the same. I know a new chain weighs 280gm apparently but don't know the length or number of links (can determine the length from the number links).

Oh mentioned this on another forum forgot that I hadn't put it here. The power meter settings need to know chain weight and length to measure chain density. Removing links doesn't affect this and as I know a new chain should weigh 280gm then if I know the number of links on such a chain I can calculate the length. I should of course remove my chain and weight it and count the number of links however removing pins on a narrow 10 speed chain can leave it vulnerable to breakage according to my very recently purchased copy of Zinn.

Mickle you are quite right. A guy on another forum had fitted one on his bike recently and had kept the extra links so he kindly counted them all for me and it was indeed 114.
