How long should the battery last on my Cateye computer?

I must have had my Cateye Mity 8 for over 4 years and much to my surprise the original battery is still going strong. How long before I should expect it to give up the ghost?

Cateye say anywhere between 2 to 5 years for the Strada, stressing that cold conditions will affect things adversely. No idea what they've said about the Mity.

It being winter now, and "Sod's Law" being what it is, I'd say you have about 2 weeks left.

Cold conditions affected my Strada today.

0 deg C. Halfway round my 25 miles, it started to tell me I was either doing 5 or 20mph then it went to 0mph for the rest of the ride. Back home, once warmed up it started to work again. Not sure why this is - I thought lithium batteries were fairly cold-tolerant.

Yes, that's my next step - it's a couple of years old.

Despite having a wide range of button lithium batteries in £1 packs, I haven't got the right one so I'll probably have to pay full wack for it.

Could be the cold weather causing the contacts to become temperamental from contraction?

That's possible, although I unclipped the unit and reinserted it during the ride without any effect. Another cause might be the reed switch in the sensor

I think the battery is the most likely problem, though. Usually, once the bike stops, the reading is 0mph then the speed area goes blank, which should happen with both the above faults. In this case, it read 0mph for over 30 minutes.

I owned a Cateye Enduro 8 for over 3 years before it was stolen, battery was always just fine. I now have a Velo 8 that's a couple of months old, should last till about 2015 :-)

How long is a piece of string................

Depends...............

Better batteries last longer (usually)

A little bit off topic but My Velo 8 is about six years old and is only on it's second batterie. I will be upgrading my Dawes Khar-Kum in the new year ready for a couple of longer treks (Clipless pedals etc)and I was wondering about a new computer. Can any one tell me if there is any advantage in fitting a wireless one and is there a more robust model but with the same spec as the Velo 8, which realy does every thing I want.

mine never last more than 2 years in the cateye strada and I use duracell

depends how much you use the bike though!

I've certainly noticed that cateye computers don't like sub zero conditions. I hope it starts to feel better when it warms up again.
