Ordered a new bike on 10th July & was originally told it would be a couple of weeks, then that got put back & it was due in this week, then arrived home this evening & there is a message on the answer phone saying the bike is now due 20th December
Over 5 months from ordering to delivery seems a bit excessive to me, but there is nothing else in the same price range that I can order instead
BTW the bike is a Surly Long Haul Trucker 62cm.
Wishing I'd not been so quick to sell the tricross now

I'd cancel the order if it left me without a bike that long. Decide if that is the only bike for you and if it isn't go elsewhere. If it is, still threaten to cancel and try to get some goodies thrown in for your inconvenience.

You could buy the LHT frame and build it yourself - would work out a bit more expensive though.

THORN offer similar machines to the LHT - have you had a look at them?

I waited 4 months for a bike once (KONA) after the delivery date kept getting put back - when it finally arrived it was crap (frame welded together by blind monkeys, scratched, nothing set-up properly) and I sent it back! Wouldn't go through that again!

Some frame size/wheel size/colour combos can be hard to source, iirc, at least according to the LHT & CC newsgroup.

Is there another Surly dealer near you?

Long wait BUT...

If you go for a different bike as opposed to the one you want for instant gratification.... in SIX months time are you going to be wishing you waited for the LHT?

Worth a thought...

Delivery of the LHT got put back further to January now.
I've contacted Surly direct & the bike was due to be made end of last month, but wont be shipped individually & they are waiting for a full shipping load to UK:sad:
Wheelies asked if I would like to choose an alernative, but the only other bike I would consider was a Ridgeback Panorama, but its £200 more. Anyway they had a look & come back & they will stand the additional cost, so the new bike should be with me tomorrow now
It's a very similar spec but the Panorama has STIs rather than bar end shifters which I is better for me & comes already fitted with racks, guards, pump, bottle cages & pedals, all of which I had already bought ready for the LHT

Buy it direct from the US. This Wheelies bike shop need to extract their digit

My custom Titanium frame took less than six months to design, build, survive an earthquake and be shipped to the LBS from China

Don't be too hard on the dealer - there's a huge problem with shipping at the moment and lots of people are having trouble getting bikes. And then, when an order comes in, the big name dealers get first dibs.

And take with a pinch of salt what the on line people say - they usually don't have the stock they claim.

Quadrupled Shipping Costs Expected to Continue to Mid 2011
Bike%20Europe%20Container%20Shortage%20234.jpg
AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – Currently shipping agencies are struggling with a shortage of over 2 million containers. It’s not only caused by an increased demand for sea transportation as other factors also come into play.

Widespread complaints on the quadrupled costs in sea freight are currently heard throughout the industry. As many importers have no clue whatsoever on the cause of the increased costs there has been already filed complaints in ‘Brussels’ on price fixing by the shipping agencies.

Dynamar shipping consultant Dirk De Visser recently stated that it is expected that the shortage will continue at least up to mid 2011. He said that at this moment annually 1 to 1.5 million new containers are being built in particular in China.

Shipping agencies have demolished lots of old containers since 2008 and failed to order new ones due to cut backs in spending. With increased trading as economies are recovering from the crisis, shipping agencies are struggling with a too low container capacity. The container handling in the port of Rotterdam in the first three months of 2010 was almost back at the record level of early 2008.

The container shortage is also caused by the fact that ships are sailing slower nowadays to save on fuel. This also cranks up demand for containers. In addition, there’s more export from Asia compared to Europe or the US causing for the fact that there are lots of empty containers in Europe which are much needed in Asia.

Enjoy tomorrow morning, Solty - good luck. I quite like the Panorama...I fancy a full-on touring bike, with no batteries, loads of space in the boot, no obligation to go faster than military medium...perfect relaxation. enjoy!
Don't know if i'll get to ride it tomorrow, depends what time it arrives. I've got a meeting at home about 11.30 ish & then I'm off to work just after 2, but I've got all Saturday morning to play
Doubt it will get used for touring for a while, prob spring at earliest, but looking to do LeJog next autumn or spring 2012, fingers crossed
