I was taken out by a car last Thursday. I had a couple of bruises the next day, which spread and then lightened in colour as you would expect. On Wednesday though I started seing a couple of new ones which are still purple. Has anyone else had this?

hard to say with out seeing but as we play the misshapen ball game of rugby i have seen a few haematomes ,like a bruise but it is a bleed the centre can sem to heal and the outside still purple it can leave a lump of congealed blood under it that takes even longer to go and can get tender towards the end,if you are at all worried go to a drop in centre they will sort you out by putting your mind at ease

I had a bit of a nasty off back in the middle of March and this was just over 1 week after the incident. Incidently I decided to get the doctor to have a look at it just in case and this was when I took the picture. She said deep bruising as our mate Berties said with the rugby injuries. Doc said haematoma been careful not to get it infected and it could be tender for quite a while afterwards.

Now nearly 3 months on there is still a bit of a lump and if I press it it can still be a bit tender. There is also marking and a bit of a scar left. If you are concerned get it checked by a doctor, but believe me it can be quite a slow healing process.

These were my bruises about 5 days after my crash in February. I've still got hard lumps beneath both my knees, which are quite painful, and my right ankle (which was infected and opened up) is a big, purple splodge with a scar in the middle - also quite painful.

"Normal" bruises generally last up to 3 weeks for me.

I've been told it depends on the size and how deep the damage is.
Go see your GP if you're worried.
A couple of years ago I came off and my hip took most of the fall. Within a few days the bruise covered the whole thigh and calf and spread all around my hips and waist (incl the groin and mens bits:eek:). Looked like I was wearing purple lycra shorts.
Quick trip to the doc, and examination by a physio and a urine test, and I was told it should go in about 6 weeks. Took a month. And only regained full skin-sensation of my hip after a year!

That's good to know. Not that it took so long, but that it did happen. The skin on my left knee is still numb, and very pale where the tan hasn't kept up with the rest of my leg. It's been 4 months, and I was starting to wonder if it was permanent. Judging from your experience, hopefully not.

The doctor said that a layer of tissue (or something) builds up under the skin after a trauma. Which is why, even after some months, the skin on one side of my hip was slightly more 'raised' than the other. I was told that sometimes this layer could be permanent, though exercise and applying ice/ very cold showers and baths would help to reduce it - by increasing circulation I guess.

That sounds very similar. It's my men's bits that I was worried about as that's where the newest and most persistent bruise is now. If yours took a month then I feel a bit easier. Thanks for the info.

I wonder it that's what happened to me. I dropped a table on my calf in early January. I still have a lump there and it's sore to the touch. I've done plenty exercise but I don't fancy the ice-cold bath :cold:
