hi,

i just wanted to ask the other female cyclists - how long did you cycle for when you were pregnant? i'm going to be commuting to work and i wonder whether i will be fit enough/small enough to cycle to work even in later pregnancy. i have no other way of getting to work (apart from taxi, which would be a small fortune...). i have a lovely folding dahon speed d7.

my other question is: when pregnant, were you able to cycle as normal, or did you get out of breath easily or feel dizzy whilst on the bike?

many thanks

Can't help you as I've not been pregnant, but you might find this interesting reading.

I did also read a story somewhere on the internet about a woman who actually cycled to hospital to give birth as well!

I think pregnancy takes everyone a bit differently though, so see how you feel...

'Oh no' at numbnuts response - I'm surprised you didn't ask if the OP was sitting with her feet up, or heavens, why she was even working?

Antiquated ideas of pregnancy being some kind of illness!
Numbnuts, you may be surprised to know that nowadays, women are encouraged to remain fully fit and active for as long as possible in pregnancy, and to get back into activity as soon as possible afterwards, unless of course have had a c-section or there are stitches to consider.

My sister rode her horse until a month before having both her boys, but she was very small both times - a good friend I work with rode her bike, up until she took maternity leave - I think around 7 months - as soon as she got too big, she stopped, but still rode her exercise bike in the back garden, with a table at one side with a glass of iced water on!

I would say do it while you feel okay, and safe, and check in with your clinician, or midwife.

I rode my whole prragnancy with #1, I bought a 'lady' bike when about 5 months gone, which was later fitted with a child seat.
Took 9yrs for #2 to come along & I had to stop at 7months as could no longer swing my leg over the crossbar, I was going to buy another lady bike but was diagnosed with a clotting disorder & put on high dose of blood thinners & advised cycling wasn't a good idea.
I cycled a little bit during #3 but as #2 was only 5 months old I didn't have much spare time LOL!

Hello, I cycled up until I started Maternity leave at around 33 weeks, after that I couldn't really get my knees high enough up when pedalling!

hi

thanks for the responses (or most of them...).

what do you mean by a 'lady bike'? i might consider one of these as i will have to cycle with my DD, taking her to nursery. like some of the other people said, i hope that cycling will help me prepare for giving birth, which last time round i found soooo exhausting, you really need to be super fit and have a lot of stamina. i'll have to get on the cycle pretty quick after the birth as well to do errands etc, hope i will be able to...

A ladies step through frame, rather then a mans frame were you have to swing your leg over a cross bar - Not very dignified or easy when you are pregnant & if have a child seat on the bcak can be quite dangerous!!
