How hooked is too hooked??!

I am in the process of replacing the BB on my MTB and while I was admiring my road bike, I noticed that the teeth on the outer chainring are starting to get hooked!

So ... how hooked is too hooked? How can I estimate when I need to replace the thing?

When the chain starts slipping over the teeth is the short answer. If it isn't yet, carry on. The chain will have worn in relation the rings. But, should you need to replace the chain the chainrings will need changing as well.

Try turning it around so that the unworn portion of the teeth drives the chain.

Only works on older/none ramped chain rings. Won't work on modern rings with pins and ramps.
