How hard?

How hard should splitting a chain be? I've just spent the last hour using a chain tool (never used one before) to get a pin out. Originally I tried the quick link but couldn't get it to work. Resorted to using a chain tool that I bought donkeys yeas ago but have never used. I'm knackered and only got the pin half out. I was having to use towels on both of the handles and put all of my (considerable) weight into every quarter turn.

Was left thinking that if I ever needed to use it by the roadside I'd be screwed! Is this normal or am I doing something wrong.

Have left it half out and will have another go tomorrow!

Any advice would be more than welcome :-)

Its easy assuming your tool is ok.You need to make sure that you dont push it all the way out but leave it slightly in the link the other side or its a reet beggar to get back in.

Hmmm...If it's usually easy then it might be that I've threaded the tool (it was cheap). I'll try undoing it and see if it eases up.

The first one I bought was a cheapie and the pin bent on only the second use. Got a better one and it was no problem. Just a bit of resistance initially then it gives a little crack and moves easily after that. Maybe your tool is goosed.

Think you're right! In a thread a couple of weeks ago I said that I was worried about doing it and you spurred me on so I need to regroup and not be defeatist!

Whatever the outcome (knackered chain tool, wrong technique ...), I would thoroughly recommend taking a piece of chain, chain tool, cup of :cuppa:, cloth to keep oil away from trousers ... and sitting down and doing the break/ make up chain routine a few times, until you really get how it is done.

Once you have the knowledge of how it is done and have the practice also, you will never have to worry about being stuck at the road side ... etc. Confidence is a fine thing.

You will also be able to use your 'superior technical knowledge' to assist others in distress on the road ^_^.

PS always carry a Quick-link too ...
