How good does the weather need to be to use your summer bike?

Hi all,

I've just become a multi-bike owner by adding a BeOne Storm 2.0 road bike to the Carrera Subway hybrid I've been riding since the end of last summer.

My idea was to use the BeOne as my summer/good weather bike while keeping the Carrera as a winter hack but with the new bike now sat in my living room I'm desperate to get out and give it a go!

For other people with multiple bikes what conditions do you need before you get your best bike out on the road? Or as long as it gets a good clean back at home does it not really matter what the weather's like?

Cheers ;)

for me it is when there is no rain (or forecast dry) and when I don't need lighting.

I just use my bike all year round. I don't get the winter/summer bike thing. This is my 2nd winter on my Cayo '07 and I've probably done about 10k miles on it. It's waterproof. I don't see any detrimental effects from not keeping ot warm and dry.

I'd settle for the roads not to be covered in a dirty salt solution !

Well, at the moment I would not take my new bike out (not that I could as it hasn't arrived yet), if there was even a hint of a raincloud in the sky...Get even slightly upset by the idea of the tyres getting dirty!

Suspect that might change after a while....

I only use my summer bike between 1 Jan and 31st Dec.

I last used mine on the Costa Blanca in March 2007 - seriously!

The UK summers of 2007 and 2008 were so crap that I haven't even bothered to unpack it from my bike box. ;)

Rumours abound of a good summer in the UK this year, so I'm hoping that I'll get to ride a few thousand km on it.

I was planning on doing the Winter/Summer thing when I bought my Spesh Allez a couple of years back... only problem was t was such a joy to ride compared with my Hybrid that I ended up using it all the time. When it got stolen and I replaced it with the Allez Elite the same logic applied... but has failed again. If it's not icy then I use the road bike... if it's too bad for that then I revert to using my Hybrid again.

Mine did get used all year but in October I bought a Trek 1.2 with mudguards as a winter bike and it seems just fine. I am going for a week's triathlon training at the end of March in Lanzarote and think I will take the Trek - it really doesn't feel much slower than my Scott Speedster S10. I do also have a Carerra Subway as a runaround (new wheels and groupset over the past few years) and that is a superb bike, but getting no use now.
