Hi All,

I have been experiencing problems with the front gear change on my MB. It is an SRAM X-9.

I went through the sheet that came with it, but it was a bit awkward and I wondered if anyone knows of a simple explanation for a newbie?

Coming in this morning I was struggling to get on the big cog again.

Thanks for your help.

Best regards

Chris

Not Sram but on my Shimanos, the two screws adjust the stop points (just like the rear mech), the bracket adjusts the alignment and the tumbler (thumb screw either at the shifter or on the cable) adjusts cable tension, too much tension often stops me dropping to the lower chain-ring.

I would think its incorrect cable tension or the Hi limit screw. I always double check on a new (to me) bike that the derailleur cage is parallel to the bike. If its not then front gear change reliability can be very intermittent.

I have SRAM on my bike - sounds lilke the Hi limit screw. Shine a light at the front mech. With the chain on the inside sprocket look for the screw bottom with the biggest gap. Increase this gap. Put the chain on the outer sprocket. Tighten that screw. When you hear a noise from the chain catching loosen the same screw another half turn.

That's very simplistic - but should get you going. Once you're confident you can make minor adjustments to the upper and lower limiter screws to prevent chain chatter.

If you don't think it is the limiters then it could be cable stretch.

To set up the derailleur undo the cable pinch nut letting the cable free.

Then run through the gears on the left hand shifter so that you identify the position for the small ring and big ring.

Then put the shifter in the big ring position.

Now all you have to do is match the front mech to this - so apply force to the front mech with your hand so that it positions above the big ring (and slightly beyond) and then tighten up on the cable to lock the front mech in this position

I don't know if the Sram shifter has trim - but that is the basics.

Hi All,

Many thanks for your responses.

I have however found what the problem is!!

I noticed that the pedal seemed to be clonking then is started to squeak!

Checked as I was about to leave the office and the left hand side crank bolt is missing! So the crank was free to move laterally hence the gears not working properly all of the time! Aaargh!

I am hoping you are going to tell me that this is a standard part and I can pop into Bikes n Boards tomorrow and buy a new one!!

Turns out it is only a pinch bolt and is useful but not necessary. Got one on order from the very helpful Bikes n Boards and it is only a few pounds!

In the meantime an 18mm bolt will bring the pedal/crank together and then I can do up the bolts on the left hand pedal! Phew

Well I did up the bolts as suggested by the supplier of the 'pinch bolt' but it came undone again! Hopefully if I do it really tight, it won't do any damage?

A good tip if you want to try and sort it out quick and cable stretch is the issue.. Undo the cable, pull the cable 5mm or so further through the pinch nut and re-tighten. Use incremental shifts until it is correct.
