Slippery slope - the money you save on doing your own work will quickly go on tools that you absolutely must have...I hope you are either single, or have an understanding other half.
Be slow and cautious when threading the tool in and make very sure you've removed any washers. Use a good tool (like the Park one) with flats on the part you thread in. This way you can use a spanner to get it out if it gets stuck for any reason. The first time I did this I used a cheap tool without flats and ended up having someone machine some in when it got stuck.
Chainrings just unscrew normally from one another/the spider using an allen key. Bottom brackets aren't that hard but you need to pay attention to the direction of the threads as they are usually reversed on one side. Again, there are lots of online tutorials on this.
