How do you measure stem?

How do you measure a stem? Suppose a stem is 100mm. What does that mean? Total length from one end of the stem to the other? Or is the measurement from the centre point of the hole where the aheadset goes, to the centreline of the handlebars? (Hope you understand what I mean by that...)

I am thinking of trying a slightly shorter stem on my bike, but first I need to establish what length of stem it has got - hence my question.

Stem length is measured from the centre of the headset to the centre of the bars and this can obviously vary from stem to stem.
