Hi folks

I have a Trek 6500, but I need a new BB, outer and middle chain rings.

I wondered how you know what spares to buy as there are a multitude of these types of components? is there some trick I am missing LOL !

thanks for all who reply

Is it the 2011 with SLX crankset?

Bottom brackets must be Hollowtech 2 or compatible (aftermarket ones will specify) The chainrings are pretty specific, as not only must the BCD be the same, but Shimano have different shaped fixing tabs machined in compared with say SRAM or FSA. A lot of aftermarket stuff tends to be cheap shite, or ueber-expensive

Read the name off the cranks and count the teeth on the rings. I suspect you'll have 42T 32T and 22T rings. The part numbers to google will be M660

Shop around. Ebay sellers tend to be a bit optimistic about what stuff's worth, but there are some power sellers on ebay that do some absolute bargains, such as Absolute Cycles, Woolyhatshop and others.

Merlin and Evans have offers on regularly, Tredz online tend to be very competitive.

Let me know the spec and I'll make some suggestions.

Like for like replacements regarding type and size, then choose the brand to fit your budget.

BB’s will be the type; square taper, octalink, ISIS, HT2 (external) and the relevant shell size and axel length - measure it.

Rings are fairly standard but will be by arm (bolt) - usually 4 - and tooth 44 outer & 32 middle and BCD (104mm maybe)
