I know when I bought my Bontranger that the shop measured me, nice saddle and was very comfortable from the start.

yes, i was measured too. sat me on a pad and when i got off, there were two dents where my pelvic sit bones were. they measured across and got a saddle the same size.

anywhere that does Specialized or Bontraguer saddles should have a pad.

Sit on a bag of sand, huge lump of blu-tac, or anything else that will take an impression and then measure the distance between your sit bones.

And then what? Do they do saddles in different widths or something? Not being facetious - I'm genuinely intrigued. I never knew saddles came in different sizes.

Yes, the overall width / depth / padding of a saddle, the bits that most people check when they are in a shop, are pretty much irrelevant for comfort over a longer distance. The only important thing is support for the sit-bones.

You can get a very good friend to measure without the use of sand or Blu-Tac, but they need to be a very good friend and I'd suggest avoiding baked beans or fartichokes for a few days beforehand, just to be certain.
