How do they keep varying the keys for locks?

Wouldn't it actually be (10^5)-10 and (10^6)-10, otherwise you'd end up with 10 occasions for each lock where the key was flat?

I was covering this on the train in this morning, but got bored of trying to type it out on the phone.

I imagine that they also wouldn't use some other combinations, like gradual incline, or decline of a key. So that would remove some more also.

I may enjoy this stuff, but I'm not so nerdy I want to go into this much detail

There's also rotation of pins that can be varied.
A small flat on the pin having to match the hole on the outer of the lock mechanism, before it will fit.

Bic pens were a device for picking oxford bike locks..
half a tennis ball over a old ford ctrl lock struck so a vacume occurred opened them...
5 drill hole template to beat high security car alarm..fitted to most high value cars a few yrs ago..
angle grinder for just about anything else..

you got to love ingenuity...bstards always find a way..

they break into your house now as the security is almost unbeatable without keys..
so rest easy in your beds.....

Anti-bump, anti-drill, anti-pick, locks, with those keys that can only be cut by computer from cards.

The door and your windows is the biggest weakness now if you have modern locks.

Climbing boots were used to beat/defeat the locking system on a Ford Transit, no hot wiring required.

The thieves round near work are well tooled up. They have got into the bike shelter, and went through d-locks with angle grinders. Those of us with lots of locks were left. They were in and out before security could get over !
