Hello all,

I wish to remove the freewheel from my lads BMX, It has nothing to grip it by in order to turn it apart from two small holes. We always used to do this as kids by using a centre punch and giving it a good wacking until it started to turn normally we only did this as the freewheel was broken so any more damaged didn't matter but in this case I wish to remove it intact. is there a correct way /tool for doing this? Below is a pic of the same type of freewheel.

Nope for it too come off you have to take it apart and bump it in the bin

At some point in the recent past single speed free-wheels lost the pair of tabs which allow you to remove them. Which means that you have to destroy them to get them off.

FREEWHEEL WARNING

Hello All,

Thought I'd post my near disaster at the hands of a hammer ! As a warning to others . Years ago as a kid we used to hammer a knackard freewheel round using a centre punch until it broke loose and then just turn the thing off. In those days most of our hubs were steel ( this being the important bit !). My little ones new bike a cruiser BMX ( nice simple a tough) was a little too high geared for him (everywhere you go round here is either up or down hill) I decided nice simple job we'll go from a 16 to 18 tooth freewheel and I can keep the 16 for a future single speed project. I never even thought the freewheel would be directly threaded to the alloy of the hub !!! (I thought there would have been a steel shoulder carrying the thread ) I gave it a good whack with the hammer /centre punch and it broke free then went instantly tight tried it again turning but very tight ! To cut a long story short the use of the hammer had made the freewheel jump threads but only on one side ,the freewheel was now cross threaded on the way off ! I had to give it whack to try and force it to again jump the threads so that it would at least turn off with out killing the rest of the threads. I managed to get the thing off very slowly but had to hammer it off the threads on the end. It looked pretty rough ! I wire brushed the treads and applied stud lock then tried to turn the other freewheel on amazingly it went on and has stayed on ? My advise to anyone who is going to attempt this on one of these freewheels is to weld the outer to the inner stick it in a vise and then turn the wheel please don't hammer the thing. The lads wheel I'm guessing would have been a little hard to find as it's black ,24 inch and has 14 mm axles he would have been well disappointed.
