How do I dispose of/recycle a wheel?

Just done a quick search but I can't find any previous post that answers my question, so....

Just bought a new rear wheel as the rim on my old one has just about had it. I asked the guy at the LBS about how to recycle or responsibly dispose of the old one but he didn't really know. He mentioned that the shop sends their wheels to a commercial disposal/recycling centre but I didn't ask if I could dump my wheel on them as I thought it would be a bit rude and they probably have to pay for disposal.

So can anyone on here give me an idea about how to recycle some or all of the wheel. If not, how best to dispose of it?

Council tip.

We have a gypsy camp not far from us, and when we have anything metal to get rid of we just leave it outside and it's usually gone in a few hours. That was how I recently got rid of several old wheels after a shed clearout.

Phone your local recycling centre, mine will take wheels as scrap metal.

I sometimes cycle past a house that has used old wheels to form a trellis for climbing plants.

Thanks for the tips all. Looked up the local recycling centre and according to their website they take miscellaneous scrap metal so I'll wander down there and drop it off.

... and sometimes you can pick up stuff that other people are about to chuck out.

One time there was a couple that had just moved and were about to put almost a whole unused roll of bubble wrap in the crusher. I soon had that off them and it gave hours of fun for the kids (and me). Another time someone was about to chuck a Fender practice guitar amp. That'l do nicely.
