How big are my wheels?

Stupid question - I know.

But the bike I bought was a private sale on eBay some time ago, and so I don't have the bike spec anywhere.

I need to buy some mudguards but don't know how to determine the right size.

Can you help?

Thanks

Many wheels have the size engraved on them somewhere and the existing tyres will almost certainly have the wheel size on them. What type of bike is it. Is it a road bike (racer), a hybrid or a mountain bike. Most racers will have narrow 700c wheels, hybrids fatter 700c wheels and mountain bikes 26" wheels.

There are more variations but the above should let you choose the mudguards.

Thanks compo - it's a hybrid.

I'll have a look on the tyres when I get home tonight and see if it's there. I assume that it's critical to get the right size mudguards?!

Most hybrids are 700c, although some hybrids have 26" wheels and some have 29" wheels. You obviously need the right size for the wheel AND the correct width. You also will need to ensure you have the clearance between the wheels and frame to accommodate the mudguards, less likely to be a problem on a hybrid.

Which make/model of bike do you have. it's quite likely someone on here will know just what you need.

Mudguards come in 2 diameters (for 700c wheels or for 26" wheels), and several widths. The width should be comfortably larger than the widest tyre you are going to fit to the wheel - a minimum of an extra 8mm or so is about right.
So a 35mm mudguard is OK up to a 28mm tyre or a 45mm mudguard is OK up to about a 38mm tyre.

The quick remove mudguards (Raceblaces or Crudguards) are generally only intnded for road bikes with tyres up to 25mm.

700c and 29'r rims are the same thing. I recently built some bomb proof wheels for my 700x35c shod hybrid so went with a set a Mavic 29'r MTB rims. My 700x35c tyres fit right on as if they were made to
The selection of wide rimmed 700c wheels seems very limited, but search for 29er and you tend to find a lot more options

The "standard" ETRTO sizing is measured as the "bead seat diameter" so, roughly, half way down the rim side wall (where the brake pad goes) on one side of the wheel to the same place on the other side.

700c and 29" are 622mm
old school 27" wheels are 630 mm (but use same mudguard size as 700c)

The 26" MTB size is much smaller: 559 mm

The chances of it being much different are remote, but a full table of all the possible sizes is here.
