I managed to pick up a secondhand Specialized Hotrock 16 for a keen price. Needs minor fettling but our youngest is going to be very happy, and I'm sure it will be a huge improvement on her princess fairy pink glitter steel BSO monstrosisty!

My only concern is the rear brake is a coaster rather than a conventional one. Ideally I'd like to change this to a v-brake as she struggles a bit at the moment getting the right pedal position for a "launch", and the lack of back pedalling may make this worse!

So has anyone converted a kiddies coaster in to a v-brake and can give me any tips as to what's involved? I've seen a few people selling converted Hotrock's before so I assume it's a well trodden path!

Thanks - Rufus.

so you wish to convert from a coaster braking system to a normal hand brake operated one

Try Here it might help, but I'm not sure what type of hub is fitted but this might help too

Try a google search

I'd be inclined to leave it. She'll soon pick up the 'starting scoot'.

Sound advice as ever User, I hadn't considered the advantage of the coaster, and given some of her death defying downhill descents a little extra brake force might be handy.

That and she'll be able to do mean skiddies that will annoy her older sister!

Thanks also @NormanD for the links:

The most effective braking system on that bike is...

She puts the toe of her shoe against the seat stays and stands on the rear tyre.

Just like BMX.

Before you know it, she'll be holding the rear wheel stationary with her foot and doing wheelstand 360s.
