Disappointing comments on a news website article following the collision of a horse & rider with a car in Hampshire, which killed the horse rider: My link

http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/8853239.Horse_rider_s_road_safety_call/

Could similarly be applied to the public view of cyclists:

"IN THIS DAY AND AGE THERE IS NO PLACE FOR HORSES ON THE PUBLIC HIGHWAY,RIDE THEM ON YOUR OWN LAND!"

"Perhaps the same campaigners will consider the safety risk horse riders pose to drivers. Insurance and road tax wouldn't go amiss either."

Sigh..

Some drivers just do not understand it's called a public highway not a car highway.

Horses were there before cars and cyclists.

I rode horses on a daily basis for years and I can say with confidence that horse riders would far rather not have to ride on the roads! Road riding doesn't come near the thrill of galloping across open country. BUT it's simply not possible to ride on bridleways alone, as the network in this country isn't joined up.

I wish drivers on country lanes would remember that just round the corner could be a child on a pony - or on a bike of course, although a bike doesn't have a mind of its own, which makes life more difficult.

Some people seem to think that all horse riders are posh and have their own estates to ride on, but this couldn't be further from the truth. I feel so sad for this poor rider's family and friends, to have lost someone so tragically and then to have to put up with some people's total lack of humanity. Sickening.

damn right. in my opinion cars need to treat country lanes differently. tractors, horses, bikes, animals and walkers all need to be respected, if they cant be safe on country lanes where can they be?

I rather think you missed the irony in Jezston's post there Mark. Funny, but I never thought of him as being that subtle :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:.

I'm sorry you are "not a fan" of us all sharing the road, and using it in a manner which respects each other rights and limitations, on this forum I would have hoped that was a "given".

Also sad that said "Daily Echo" is my local rag... I hesitate to use the word "newspaper"

Terrible story, extremely grim.

As for the comments, you have to remember that the people who write these things are probably pretty insecure types who nobody really listens too in real life and have to make up for it by posting comments on forums. For every one who thinks like this there are a few thousand others who don't but don't bother posting.

Me insecure...... . But seriously without the horse we in this country wouldnt have the privileges we have today. A noble beast mistreated by mankind throughout the ages. if you ever get the chance listen to the ode to the horse read at every Horse of the year show.
