My rides tend to be 20-30 miles max around London, I bring a drink with me but I wanted to pick everyone’s brains on the best “home made” power/rehydration drinks.. I just hate paying the silly prices for these pre-produced drinks....

Currently I just take diluted Robinsons orange juice but I notice I lose LOTS of salt on rides and I should be adding it back (my T-shirt has tons of slat lines after a ride)

Suggestions please :wacko::smile:

20-30 miles is water isn't it?

a proper cycle jersey will be far more comfortable than anything that soaks up sweat, yuk

they do semi relaxed ones, i started on on them, and they certainly do those sorts of sizes

if you look on Prendas they do loads of good kit very cheap because it's end of line in either very small or very large sizes, mind you, their stuff might all be pure race cut

the off road kit is usually baggy/loose

as for getting away with it, it's about you, if it makes you more comfortable, and it will, what the hell, I used to feel rather self concoius in full lycra, I love it now, as long as there's a bike fairly nearby

It's highly important to stay hydrated. I've forgot the actual figures but it's something scary like 4% dehydration causes a 25% loss in performance.

Saying that, for a 20-30 mile road ride I probably wouldn't take anything except water. My commute (if I go the long way) is 30miles and it's rare that I carry a drink at all.

Water with me for upto 30 miles - over that, and if it's hilly it's a sports drink.

TBH I like Isostar Long Energy - about £10 a tub, 5 scoops per 500 ml bottle and it lasts ages - I usually knock the strength down though.

re sweat getting in your eyes, get a buff & wear as a hat under your helmet (if you wear a helmet that is), they are cool in hot weather and warm in cold. Will stop the sweat getting in your eyes.

I made the mistake of making my own energy drinks after I found various recipes on the internet. The mistake I made was the fact that I did not need them for most rides and I was taking more calories than what I was burning on a ride and it resulted in me not loosing any weight for a long period of time till I relaised the error. Now as mentioned by others its just water and fruit juice on short rides and my home mades on long arduos rides 40+

Of top of my head I believe it around 7-9% strength for an energy drinks regarding carbs but I'm probably wrong.

I usually purchase Glucose powder from "Superdrug" where its cheap as chips, and also Dextrose tablets, everything else I purchase from:-

http://www.myprotein.co.uk/

and usually buy Fructose and Maltodextrin to make my energy drinks from them. If you look on the site and the various "carb" products they list recomended amounts. The site is also usefull as to date it is the only place I have found that sells caffeine which I also use in my energy drinks and compared in price to buying the likes of "Proplus" its very cheap.

Additionally I also add a pinch of Salt, the one that has Potasium chloride as well as Sodium chloride

Overall though my advise is if its short runs and you plan on loosing weight don't bother with them.
