I'm replacing the Hollowtech BB on my road bike and have a, hopefully, quick question. Is the plastic tube that goes between the two major parts necessary as surely the contact points with the spindle from the crankset are on the BB?

Ta in advance.

It no doubt acts as a very lightweight protective sheath ( fnarr!), so worth keeping despite it's tiny weight penalty.

Cheers. In my defence I'm not weight obsessive honest!!! I feel a good, long trip to the loo is better than spending money shaving weight off the bike. I am obsessive about clicking noises and if the plastic doesn't do anything I could eliminate one piece of the bike that could click.....
