Hollowtech FC - 4503 QUERY

Sorry everyone yet another question.

Does anyone know whether I can use the Shimano Hollowtech FC - 4503 triple chain ring with 10 speed Campag levers and front deraileur.

I have wrapped the chain around the chain ring and although the 10 speed chain is narrow it seems to sit on it ok.

Be handy if you confirm that it will be ok because its brand new and has been in my spares box for years.

If you levers are Ultra shift I think it should work.

Firstly the shifter should have microshifting (and not "indexed" with limited trim positions as with some of the Escape mechs), I think that is what PpPete suggested.

However there is a second proviso. Most modern Campag 10 speed front mechs have official chain ring limits of 54T max, 34T min, but capacity of only 16T between largest and smallest. On the other hand the FC4503 could be e.g. 50/39/30, breaching the official min, and perhaps more importantly the capacity. This does not automatically mean it won't work, but it might not. Unless the chainset's range is within your particular front mech's spec, it is not so easy to tell whether it will work without trying it because there are numerous influencing factors (including esoteric measurements, such as chain stay angle...).

Finally, assuming the new chainset's range is wider than existing, if I were you I would also check that the rear mech's chain wrap capacity is not breached by the new chainset and the existing cassette. You might also need a longer chain.

Hope this helps.

^^Wot 'e sed. If it's a triple front mech you should be OK, but if not, then probably not.
I *may* have a spare 8 speed Sora triple front mech knocking about if you need it.
