We are heading to a cottage near Skipton this summer, a part of the world I have never been to before.

For a relatively novice cyclist, who only cycles for fun and doesn't do endurance, would it be worth popping my bike in the back of the car?

What kind of routes might I find around this area please?

Hilly ones :-)

I'm in Settle, and we do a fair bit of cycling. None of it is flat, but some is easier than others. One could probably make a ride involving Bolton-by-Bowland, and another involving Grassington. Get some low gears, and you've got the entire dales to play with - the C roads are nearly all lovely.

Definately bring the bike.

I live about 12 miles from Skipton. Don't be put off by the hills, there's not much severe stuff. The Dales tend to be undulating and long gentle drags rather than steep. Of course there is steep stuff if you fancy it (Storiths and Langbar for two)

Skipton - Embsay - Bolton Abbey - Burnsall - Appleetreewick and back would give you a nice undulating route with lovely views, local roads, cafes and pubs a plenty. And that's just one route. There are loads of options.

Where you staying exactly?

We are staying in a cottage in a place called Cononley

Cononley is a couple of miles south of Skipton, so as well as options towards the Dales you also have the Aire valley; Keighley, Howarth, Oakworth etc. and also west towards Colne via Lothersdale.

And there's also the Leeds Liverpool canal which passes through Skipton. A nice ride down to Saltaire for a meal and a couple of drinks in the Boathouse pub and back will give you a nice 25 mile round trip.

Enjoy.

Yes there's hills, but there a plenty of flattish roads along the bottom of the valley - many of them quiet.

Bring the bike.

The road west out of Cononley might appeal to you ... ;)

i can highly recommend the 'the black lane ends' pub, (info here). it's about 6 miles one way from where you are staying. good beer, good food excellent atmosphere and they always have the open fire going on chilly days.
