Looking at buying an old reynolds 753 frame but it has a small hole in the chainstay. As the title alludes to, any advice as to how much it'll cost to repair and if this will compromise the frame would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. PS I the media insertion thing isn't allowing me to use photobucket and i'm not sure how to upload straight from my hard drive so apologies for the link.

I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. The chainstay itself is replaceable (it won't be cheap) but the hole is due to internal corrosion which is highly unlikely to be confined to just that area.

thanks, was taken in by the cheap components and the promise of a retro frame I could work on, will steer clear of now i've got some informed opinion, cheers.

No chance - that's a massive hole. 753 is thin, and obviously there would have been standing water in the BB area for a long time for that to happen.

It's not been looked after.

I had a bike once that developed a hole in the chain stay, because of my own stupidity and let an off centered chain ring catch it occasionally. A while later after I had sorted out the chain ring but never bothered repairing the chain stay, the chain stay completeley cracked in half giving me a bit of a wobbly ride and I dumped the bike.

PS I ride two 20 year old steel bikes and abuse them, so this is a badly looked after 753, bloody shame. Abuse in my language is ride hard..... they get cleaned and polished........

The lugs will be rotten inside, the hole in the chain stay is just the rust starting to spread, it was unsafe long before you noticed it.
