I don't know if this has been caused by cycling or not, but I suspect it has. I am nearly 50 years old, have ridden bikes on a casual basis since the age of 5, but only in the last 2 years have I started to do big(ish) mileages. Last year I covered about 4500 miles, some of it on big hills (no choice where I live). I do not use SPD's.

January 28th this year I came off my MTB; classic front braking on black ice - front wheel slides away and deposits me on tarmac. Quite a heavy landing with left hip and shoulder taking the brunt. All seemed fine for over a week, during which I did a couple of 40+ mile rides. Then I noticed my left hip was getting sore; not while cycling but soon afterwards - it would stiffen up and be quite painful, just at the top of the femur and towards the outside of the leg.

I cut down on the cycling to see if that helped, and it did. Unfortunately every time I think it has cleared up, I get back on the bike and it recurs. Now I am worried about cycling, and even more worried that I might have done some lasting damage. Going to make an appointment to see my GP and see what he says. Knowing the NHS though I will get referred for physio and have to wait months to get any treatment. Private not an option at the moment due to lack of job; that is why I have been passing the time cycling.

Reassurance wanted! I really don't want to face a summer of unemployment without being able to get out and about on my bike .

I'm no expert but I find I can ignore/not notice lots of minor injuries whilst on the bike. Endorphins. warming up, adrenalin or whatever but notice them once I've stopped.

Bruised bones can take months to heal properly. I landed on the point of my hip (ischeal tuberosity?) one year and it remained sore for 6 months but cycling was fine. Similarly I sprained a thumb which is still not 100% pain-free after 9 months.

Having googled bruised bones, that would make sense! Now have an appointment to see the Doc, but not until Tuesday 27th. I would be quite happy if it is a bruised bone; at least then it is just a matter of patience while it clears up. My real worry is that my hip joint is starting to wear out .

FWIW, Brandane, I have a total hip replacement too! To offer you some solace the pain/discomfort I suffered for many years was either inside the groin area or in the buttocks. I hope it's not a hip wear problem but it's not the end of the world if it is. I'm back to riding without issues.
Strangely, the ache from the hip was referred and it felt as if the pain was in the knee.
